Holy Cow---"Were Pounding Some Big Fish"
Staging Kings --- Starting To Arrive!!!
High water and a lack of current have kept King Salmon from
entering the eastern basin. Now, with the staging time frame
approaching, Kings are beginning to arrive.

Judd & Todd Wagner along with their wives Sarah and Diane took these huge
Lakers and Staging Kings on Monday. The big Lakers hit Cowbells and Spin N' Glo's
while the Kings took big Flashers with 21" flies.

The Big Browns and Lakers that have kept us
going all summer are still here!!!
1st mate David Zangari shows the Green Natural Born Killer Stinger Spoon that
Dave Poley (NJ) used to take this big Brown.  Later in the day, Dave's daughter
hung this big Laker on a Cowbell/Spinner combination.

Every year the boys from Jersey come for a 6-boat tournament.  Our old buddy
Mike Gawel organizes the event and its loads of fun.  Here are just a few of the
big Lakers and Browns that were taken during this year's event.
We can't wait
to do it again!!!!  - thanks guys...
  Staging Kings Come Home!

We have been waiting for the staging Kings to arrive and they are finally beginning to enter the eastern basin.  The photo at left is of Judd Wagner (PA) and a staging Male King that he took on a flasher/fly combination

Since its early in the staging process, the Saiff team loaded full size flashers with short 21" flies for an aggressive presentation.  This King hit a White/Silver Flasher with a Black/Silver/Green "Mooneye" fly by A-Tom-Mik.  This King came 131 ft. down on a Winger.

Things should really break loose on Kings over the next 4 weeks!

Another Member of the 20 lb. Club!

Here is Dave Sinclair holding a big Laker that tips the scale at 20 1/2 lbs.  This fish hit in 136 feet of water just off the tip of the "Finger".  It is no surprise that this fish hit one of our greatest Lake Trout combinations.  The Silver/Lazer Green NK cowbells with a medium sized spin n' glo trolled 32 inches behind.  The spin n' glo is the classic chartreuse "Bumble Bee" pattern.

Dave backed his 20 pound plus Laker up with another that weighed over 17 lbs.!!!!!

The Saiff Fleet fishes spoons exclusively for Spring Brown Trout.
Michigan Stinger is the spoon of Choice at this time of year and
we catch the Big Browns to prove it.
These spoons tolerate lots of speed,
come equipped with great hooks and come in color patterns to match any fishing
situation.
We hook em' and land em' on Stinger Spoons!!!!

Some Tips For Booking Your Lake Ontario Adventure!

Each season we introduce more anglers to the world class fishery on Lake Ontario.  Our  goal is to properly inform them about our great fishing opportunities so that they may make quality decisions while booking.  Rest assured that "OUR" fishery is outstanding throughout the season.  The variety of species and technique is what keeps angling here fresh and exciting!!!

Summer King Spectacular
"Fishing the Hot Zone"

When the Saiff Boys get together it spells "Bad Medicine" for the local King Salmon population.
The Photo above is a perfect example of how we coordinate among our multi boat fleet to stay
over the best groups of fish.  I want to thank Capts. George Kogut, Scott Lennox, Scott Durant,
Jeff Butcher and Jon Mandich for this great catch of Summer Kings!

Tip
Summer King fishing is one of the "Hallmarks of the Saiff Fleet!  Read our articles on "Shipping Lane" Kings and you will understand why the last week of June and the month of July are so special.  Our veteran anglers realize that big, bright, silver Kings can be had in amazing numbers throughout the summer months.  Other guide operations are just beginning to utilize a fishery that we have been exploiting for 20+ years.  Weekend fishing can be great but remember, weekdays keep you away from the crowds!

Big "Football" Browns
April

Capt. George Kogut holds a dandy Brown taken by G. McKinney during an April trip
on the south shore.  These Browns hit a 10 rod planer board pattern and the action can
be fast and furious.

Tip
The Saiff Fleet has been offering a spring Brown Trout specialty trip for 12 years on lake Ontario's south shore.  We offer this trip while we are waiting for the ice to go out in the Henderson Harbor area.  This trip also adds an extra 30 days to our fishing calendar.  Clients stay with us at the "Grey Gables" lodge in Sodus Pt. NY.  Our Saiff Charter #5 boat is berthed at Pultneyville, NY and we use it to access one of the best areas for spring Browns in all of Lake Ontario.  Note:  This trip books very quickly.  Interested clients should make arrangements as soon as possible.

Walleye & Northern Pike
May-Early June (Walleye/Pike)
August-Sept. (Walleye)

Tip (Walleye)
Two really good time frames exist for catching Walleye on Lake Ontario.  The months of May and June represent a time when Walleye can be taken near shore.  The back-bays of the eastern basin are loaded with big fish at this time of year.  Generally fishing takes place in 15 to 30 feet of water.  August and September finds these same Walleye offshore in deeper water haunts.  During the Spring fishery Walleye can be combined with Pike and during summer outings, Walleye can be combined with Bass.

Tip (Northern Pike)
Northern Pike fishing has become one of the most sought-after fishing trips that our service offers.  During the month of May the harbors and bays in the eastern basin are filled with Pike in the 5 ro 14 lb. range.  These Pike hit big floating Minnow style plugs like the one in this photo.  Pike are great fighter and world-class table fare.  In fact - during the spring season, many of our client choose to have shore dinners prepared from this great gamefish.  Bill Saiff's Westview Lodge and Marina has a great reputation for preparing fresh fish taken daily from our boats!

Lake Trout (Spring to Fall)

Tip
Some of the biggest Lake Trout in Lake Ontario exist in the eastern basin.  The geographic structure that's present in the eastern end of the lake is perfect habitat for Jumbo Lakers.  Over the years, the Saiff Fleet has taken many trout that have broken the 20 lb. mark.  Our largest Laker to date is an enormous 30 lbs. 4 oz.  Lakers can be taken readily from May to September but we recommend June fishing for Lakers in the "Shipping Channel" as well as August and September fishing south of Stony Point Lighthouse.  Big fish congregate during summer months and the action can be fantastic!

Staging King Salmon (Aug-Sept)

Tip
Staging King Salmon fishing takes place during the months of August and September each year.  This is the last time that these big fish group together and feed before entering the tributaries to feed.  This is an exciting time to fish because these Kings have reached their maximum body weight.  Veteran anglers have fished this time frame for years.  Staging time periods do not always represent the best fish action but it is an excellent time for big fish!  Fishing for big Kings is like hunting Big Game!  These fish will average 20 to 35 pounds and will test the angler and his tackle when one is hooked!

Don't Forget the Coho's

Tip
The biggest Coho's in the world swim the waters of Lake Ontario during the staging season.  We have taken examples through 23 pounds and each year many are taken in the 12 - 20 pound range.  Flasher and fly combinations seduce many of these big fish and they consistently hit while trolling for Kings!

Small Mouth Bass (Late June-Sept.)

Tip
Bass fishing on Lake Ontario is absolutely excellent.  Bass season opens on the third Saturday in June.  The Saiff Fleet uses planer boards with small J-9 Rapalas to target these early fish.  When the Bass move deeper, they begin to relate to structure.  When this occurs, we drift or anchor with live bait.  Minnows and Crawfish are suspended over the structure and the action can be fast!  We use lightweight spinning tackle as we pursue what some consider to be the hardest fighting freshwater fish.

added Bonus:

Making Our Fishery Better

The New York State DEC truck arrives on the docks of Bill Saiff's Westview Lodge
and Marina.  The truck is there to deliver nearly 15,000 Brown Trout.  These fish
were mostly 6 to 10 inches in length and should have an excellent survival rate in
the waters of Lake Ontario.

Capt. Mitch Franz holds the flow pipe while Brown Trout
are flushed from the stocking truck.  The Westview docks
provide cover from avian predators as the small Browns
adjust and disperse into the surrounding waters.
